Hallo, mijn naam is Mariska. Aangenaam!
I am a Dutchie living in Diemen, a small town right next to Amsterdam. I live with some of my favorite people in the world: Pieter, the love of my life, Cato (3) and Hugo (1). I’m a vegetarian in love with peanut butter, dancing and anything to do with personal growth, and I very much dislike big fish and grumpiness. I’ve always enjoyed travelling. Different surroundings and new environments helped me to broaden my horizons. Nowadays, I travel less but by teaching and connecting with people from around the world, I still enjoy the international vibe.
I studied French at university, Spanish in Spain and Japanese in Japan, which was an adventurous ride. Through these experiences, I discovered my passion for language learning. And after following the Dutch Teaching Program, I uncovered my love for language teaching!
"Learning another language is not only learning different words for the same things, but learning another way to think about things."
My teaching style
As a teacher, I believe that learning a new language should be a stress-free and fun activity that easily integrates into your busy life. Over the years, I’ve seen so many students lose the joy of learning Dutch. After taking a typical Dutch course, you might believe that you’re either too old or too busy to learn Dutch. Or that there’s no need to learn the language because everybody speaks English.
These thoughts are your mind playing tricks on you to keep you from diving into the new and unknown adventure that is language learning. That’s why I want to introduce you to my own tutoring style: personal and easygoing with a good dash of humor. Making mistakes is the key to learning, so my job is to make you feel confident and relaxed.
Besides teaching the language itself, I always try to explain the whys and hows of the language and how it relates to the Dutch people and culture—so you can ‘wow’ native Dutch speakers with cultural insights.
